First Communicants 1920, from The Lanthorn, 1920
It is hard to believe that these First Communicants were living in a city torn by war. The Lanthorn Yearbook was published by the Dominican Order in Ireland, and gives a comprehensive picture of the activities of their school in Eccles Street during the year, including a full list of the pupils and the exam results for the state examinations for the year. The Dominican Order established the Eccles Street School in 1882 and it became a significant force in the education of Irish girls. The school transferred to Griffith Avenue when the Mater Hospital took over the Eccles Street site for expansion.
