Aikin, John Dr. Aikin’s Calendar of Nature/The Natural History of the Year
Edited by Arthur Aikin. Dublin, John Gough, 1799
This is an enlargement of Dr. John Aikin’s Calendar of Nature, edited by his son, Arthur. Covering the years from January to December, it gives a description of the natural history of each month, including weather, wildlife, and farming activity. Dr John Aikin was a well-known English doctor and writer, and his son a noted scientist. The printer, John Gough operated in Meath Street in the early 19th century. His output was mainly educational material and children’s books. The bookplate inside the cover records that the book was given as a prize to Abraham Chatterton (probably one of the Cork merchant family) for classical learning, on the results of the Christmas Examination 1800.
