75th anniversary of the 1916 Rising Souvenir Programme Dublin, 1991
Civic commemorations are always sensitive to current politics, and the 75th anniversary of the 1916 Rising was no exception. While the 1966 commemoration of the Rising had been marked by major state and civic celebrations, the Republic’s state military parade had been discontinued in the late 1960s and the 75th anniversary was overshadowed by the on-going Troubles in Northern Ireland. To counteract the low-key approach of the establishment to the commemoration, the Reclaim the Spirit of 1916 Committee, chaired by the artist Robert Ballagh, organised a concert, parade, pageant and giant ceili in April 1991.
