Celebrate 011

Capuchin Annual, 1967 Dublin, 1967

This photograph, taken from this long-running annual periodical The Capuchin Annual, was part of a section in called “Ireland remembers with pride Easter Week 1916 in Golden Jubilee Celebrations.” It shows the Guard of Honour outside the GPO during the commemorations. The photographic essay gives a strong sense of the excitement felt all over the country, with celebrations being held in every major and some not so major towns. There was even a commemorative march to Trafalgar Square in London. One of the photographs shows the then President of Ireland, Eamon De Valera, shaking hands with the officer who arrested him at Boland’s Mills in 1916. The Capuchin Annual  was remarkable for the quality of its design and illustrations and for the range of material covered during its publishing history.
