066 Liam Whelan Bridge (2006)
Liam Whelan began his career with Home Farm before being signed by Manchester United. He was one the famed ‘Busby Babes’ who won the League Championship in 1956 and 1957. Liam was one of the eight players tragically killed in the Munich Air Disaster in February 1958. He was just twenty-two years old. His funeral in Glasnevin was one of the biggest in the history of the cemetery. In 2006 his former team-mate Bobby Charlton helped unveil a memorial at the newly-renamed ‘Liam Whelan Bridge’ in Cabra.
This is one of a selection of photographs from the Dublin City Council Photographic Collection celebrating the proud sporting heritage of Dublin.
