010 Euro '88 (1988)
The Republic of Ireland qualified for their first international soccer tournament in 1988 when they competed in the European Championships held in West Germany. Ireland memorably beat England 1-0 in Stuttgart and the country was gripped by an unprecedented fervour for soccer. Although narrowly missing out on a place in the semi-finals, the Irish team and their manager Jack Charlton received a hero’s welcome from the people of Dublin on their return.
This is one of a selection of photographs from the Dublin City Council Photographic Collection celebrating the proud sporting heritage of Dublin.
